Make Money Online Without Paying Anything

How to Make Money Online Without Paying Anything in 2024: Jeff Lenney's Ultimate Guide

Hey there, aspiring internet moguls! Jeff Lenney here, and boy, do I have a treat for you. You've probably stumbled upon this page because you're itching to learn how to make money online without paying anything. Well, you're in luck because I'm about to spill the beans on exactly that!

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of Making Money Online

Let's start with a bit of real talk:

  • The Good News: Yes, you really CAN make money online, and there's potential to earn a boatload of it too. I'm talking "buy a yacht and sail the Caribbean" kind of money (okay, maybe start with a paddleboat and work your way up).
  • The Bad News: There are more scammers out there than fish in the sea, all itching to part you from your hard-earned cash faster than you can say "get rich quick."

But don't worry, my friend. I've been in the trenches, fought the good fight, and come out the other side with a wallet full of cash and a head full of knowledge. And I'm here to share it all with you!

My Journey: From Broke Dreamer to Online Success

Me in 2010, 1 Bedroom Apartment

Me in my home office in 2021 (Remind me to take a new picture!)

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let me share a bit about my own journey. Back in 2010, I was living in a cramped 1-bedroom apartment, dreaming of a better life. Fast forward to 2017, and I found myself in a beautiful 4-bedroom house in Orange County, California, complete with my own home office, and a few fancy watches!

How did I make this transformation? Through the power of affiliate marketing and hard work. I went from struggling to make ends meet to earning a halfway decent living (with my biggest month hitting $250k in November 2017, and yes FTC I can verify that!).

This success hasn't just padded my bank account; it's given me the freedom to travel with my family. We've been to Hawaii multiple times, taken 5 or 6 Caribbean cruises, my wife and I flew business class to Rome, Italy - and I even flew first class to Dublin for an affiliate marketing event. The best part? I get to share these experiences with my loved ones.

But here's the thing: success didn't come overnight. I failed more times than I can count. When I first started in 2007, I was jumping around trying little bits of everything, not sticking to one thing until I made it work. It took time, persistence, and a lot of learning, but it was worth every moment.

Now, I'm here to help you avoid the pitfalls I encountered and fast-track your path to online success. So, let's get started!

Top "Work From Home" Scams to Avoid in 2024

Work from home scams

Before we dive into the good stuff, let's talk about what NOT to do. These scams are like those pesky pop-up ads – they just won't go away, no matter how much we wish they would.

1. The "Envelope Stuffing" Scam: Now with a Digital Twist!

Email Processing Jobs Scam

Remember the old "stuff envelopes for cash" scam? Well, it's gotten a 21st-century makeover. Now, instead of physical envelopes, scammers are offering "digital envelope stuffing" jobs. Spoiler alert: It's still a scam, just with fewer paper cuts.

How it works: You pay a "small fee" for supplies or information, and in return, you get to... drum roll, please... scam other people into paying the same fee! It's like a digital pyramid scheme, minus the cool Egyptian aesthetics.

2. The "Envelope Writing" Scam: The Pen is Not Mightier Than the Scam

Tik Tok Envelope Writing Scam

You've probably seen this trending on TikTok. Envelope writing "jobs" are the latest reincarnation of the classic envelope stuffing scam. Here's the deal:

Scammers are promising big bucks for the simple task of writing addresses on envelopes. Sounds easy, right?

Well, hold onto your pens, folks, because here's the real scoop:

  1. What they're actually promoting is writing to online casinos for gambling credits.
  2. These credits (usually around $5) can't be cashed out - they're for gambling only.
  3. The "gurus" selling this idea are the ones really cashing in, through eBooks, courses, and "exclusive access" to this so-called opportunity.
  4. Even if you spend hours writing envelopes, you're likely to earn less than minimum wage - and that's before factoring in the cost of supplies.
  5. Many casinos are actually against this practice now, realizing it's more hassle than it's worth.

Remember, if a "job" sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Your time and effort are worth more than this envelope-shaped scam. Instead of chasing paper-thin promises, consider legitimate side hustles like freelance writing, virtual assistance, or online tutoring.

Stay savvy, folks, and keep your pens for writing grocery lists and birthday cards, not for chasing false promises of easy money.

3. The "AI Content Writing" Scam

This is the new kid on the block in 2024. Scammers claim they'll pay you big bucks to "edit" AI-generated content. The catch? You have to buy their "special AI software" first. Spoiler: The software is about as special as a participation trophy, and about as useful for making money.

4. The "Crypto Mining on Your Phone" Scam

With cryptocurrency still being a hot topic, scammers are now offering apps that supposedly let you mine crypto on your smartphone. They promise you'll make thousands while you sleep. In reality, the only thing you'll mine is disappointing notifications and maybe some malware.

5. The Classic "Paid Surveys" Scam: Still Kicking in 2024

Beware the "Take Surveys for Cash" Scam

This oldie but not-so-goodie is still around. They promise $100 for a 5-minute survey, but in reality, you'd make more money searching for loose change in your couch cushions. If you have to pay to access these "high-paying" surveys, run faster than me chasing after the ice cream truck.

The Good News: What Actually Works in 2024

Sick of the B.S.?

Want to know what REALLY works online?

Alright, now that we've covered what to avoid, let's talk about the good stuff – the legit ways to make money online without investing a dime upfront. Buckle up, because this is where it gets exciting!

1. Blogging: The OG of Online Money-Making

Blogging isn't dead; it's just evolved. In 2024, successful bloggers are more like multimedia content creators. Here's how to get started:

  1. Choose a Niche: Pick something you're passionate about. "Underwater basket weaving for left-handed people" might be too niche, but "sustainable living hacks" could be your ticket to success. When I started, I focused on exposing scammy products and recommending legitimate training programs. Find your angle and run with it!
  2. Set Up Your Blog: Use free platforms like WordPress.com or Blogger to get started. No coding required – if you can use a smartphone, you can set up a blog. But here's a pro tip: as soon as you can, invest in your own domain and hosting. It gives you more control and looks more professional. I use Bluehost for my sites, and it's been a game-changer.
  3. Create Killer Content: Write posts that are more addictive than those cat videos you can't stop watching. Mix in some infographics, videos, or podcasts to spice things up. Remember, quality trumps quantity every time. I'd rather publish one stellar post a week than seven mediocre ones.
  4. Master SEO: Search Engine Optimization is crucial. Learn about keywords, meta descriptions, and link building. It might sound like a foreign language now, but trust me, it's worth the effort. My success with affiliate marketing largely came from mastering SEO and getting my content in front of the right eyes.
  5. Build an Email List: Start collecting email addresses from day one. Your email list is gold – it's a direct line to your audience that you own and control. I wish I'd started building my list earlier; it would have accelerated my success significantly.
  6. Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments, ask for feedback, and build a community around your blog. Some of my best ideas have come from reader questions and comments.
  7. Monetize: Once you've got some traffic, start making money through:
    • Affiliate marketing (my personal favorite and main source of income)
    • Ad revenue
    • Sponsored posts
    • Digital products (e-books, courses, webinars)
  8. Diversify Your Income Streams: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. I learned this the hard way when one of my main affiliate programs shut down overnight. Diversifying saved my bacon and has made my income more stable.
  9. Stay Consistent and Patient: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your blogging empire. It took me years to see significant income, but now I'm reaping the rewards. Stick with it, keep learning, and don't give up.
  10. Network with Other Bloggers: Join blogging communities, attend conferences (virtual or in-person), and build relationships with other bloggers in your niche. Some of my best opportunities have come through connections I've made in the industry.

Remember, blogging is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires dedication, persistence, and a willingness to adapt. But if you stick with it, the payoff can be incredible. Just look at my journey – from a small apartment to a dream home in Orange County, all thanks to blogging and affiliate marketing.

2. YouTube: Where Watching Cat Videos Becomes a Career

YouTube is still a goldmine in 2024, and the best part? You don't need fancy equipment to start. Here's the lowdown:

  1. Find Your Niche: Whether it's cooking, tech reviews, or teaching people how to juggle while riding a unicycle, there's an audience for everything.
  2. Create Consistent Content: Post regularly. Think of it like feeding a pet – if you don't do it consistently, it'll die (metaphorically, of course).
  3. Engage with Your Audience: Respond to comments like you're a celebrity at a meet-and-greet. Make your viewers feel special, and they'll keep coming back for more.
  4. Monetize: Once you hit the magic numbers (1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours), you can start making money through:
    • Ad revenue
    • Sponsorships
    • Affiliate marketing
    • Merchandise (because who doesn't want a t-shirt with your face on it?)

Pro Tip: You don't need to show your face if you're camera-shy. Some of the biggest channels out there are just hands demonstrating stuff. Who knew hands could be so profitable?

3. Freelancing: Because Who Needs a Boss Anyway?

Freelancing is hotter than ever in 2024, and the best part? You can start with skills you already have. Here's how to dip your toes in the freelance waters:

  1. Identify Your Skills: Can you write? Design? Code? Translate? There's a market for almost every skill out there. Even if you think your only skill is binge-watching Netflix, trust me, someone out there needs a professional TV show reviewer.
  2. Create a Portfolio: Show off your best work. If you don't have any previous work, create some samples. Nobody needs to know that your first "client" was your mom's book club newsletter.
  3. Join Freelance Platforms: Sites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer.com are great places to start. In 2024, there are even niche platforms for specific industries, so do some digging.
  4. Set Competitive Rates: Don't undersell yourself, but don't price yourself out of the market either. It's a delicate balance, like trying to eat spaghetti without getting sauce on your shirt.
  5. Deliver Quality Work: Build a reputation for excellence. In the freelance world, your reputation is everything – kind of like in high school, but with less drama and more money.

4. Online Tutoring: Because Knowledge is Power (and Profitable)

With the rise of remote learning, online tutoring has exploded. And the best part? You don't need to be a certified teacher to start. Here's how to get into the tutoring game:

  1. Choose Your Subject: What are you good at? Math? English? Underwater basket weaving? (Okay, maybe not that last one.)
  2. Sign Up on Tutoring Platforms: Sites like VIPKid, Chegg, and TutorMe are always looking for new tutors. Some don't even require a degree!
  3. Create Engaging Lessons: Make learning fun. Use props, play games, or do whatever it takes to keep your students awake and learning.
  4. Build Your Reputation: Good reviews are like gold in the tutoring world. Treat each student like they're the next Einstein (even if they think 2+2=5).

Pro Tip: Specialize in test prep for standardized tests like the SAT or GRE. Parents will pay top dollar to help their kids ace these tests.

5. Virtual Assistant: The Swiss Army Knife of Online Jobs

Becoming a virtual assistant (VA) is like being the Alfred to someone's Batman – essential, versatile, and hopefully not stuck in a cave. Here's how to start:

  1. Develop Your Skills: Get good at things like email management, scheduling, social media management, and basic graphic design. The more you can do, the more valuable you become.
  2. Choose Your Niche: Specialize in a particular industry or type of client. Maybe you want to be the go-to VA for busy real estate agents or overwhelmed food bloggers.
  3. Create a Killer Portfolio: Showcase your skills and any relevant experience. Even managing your family's chaotic schedule counts!
  4. Network, Network, Network: Join VA groups on Facebook and LinkedIn. Attend virtual networking events. Basically, be everywhere (virtually, of course).
  5. Start Small and Scale: Begin with one or two clients and grow from there. Before you know it, you'll be juggling tasks like a pro circus performer.

6. Podcasting: Because Your Voice is Your Moneymaker

Podcasting has blown up faster than my attempts at making sourdough bread during lockdown. Here's how to get your slice of the audio pie:

  1. Find Your Niche: What can you talk about for hours without getting bored? That's your podcast topic.
  2. Invest in Decent Audio Equipment: You don't need top-of-the-line gear, but please, for the love of our ears, get a decent microphone. Your listeners will thank you.
  3. Be Consistent: Release episodes on a regular schedule. Treat your podcast like a TV show, not like your New Year's resolutions.
  4. Promote, Promote, Promote: Share your podcast everywhere – social media, relevant forums, skywriting (okay, maybe not that last one).
  5. Monetize: Once you build an audience, you can make money through:
    • Sponsorships
    • Affiliate marketing
    • Merchandise
    • Premium content

Remember, the key to podcast success is perseverance. Even if your first few episodes sound like a mix between a dying cat and a garbage disposal, keep at it!

Emerging Trends in Online Money-Making for 2024 and Beyond

The internet moves faster than my cat when I open a can of tuna. Here are some hot trends to watch:

  1. AI-Assisted Content Creation: No, AI won't replace you, but it can help you create content faster. Use tools like ChatGPT or Claude AI to brainstorm ideas or outline your blog posts.
  2. Virtual Reality Experiences: As VR becomes more mainstream, there's a growing demand for VR content creators. If you can create immersive experiences, you might just be the next VR mogul.
  3. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Niches: Green is the new black. If you can tap into the sustainability market, you're golden.
  4. Micro-Learning Platforms: Create bite-sized courses or tutorials. In 2024, people want to learn, but they want it fast and focused.
  5. Voice Search Optimization: With the rise of smart speakers, optimizing your content for voice search is crucial. It's time to start thinking about how Alexa and Siri can help you make money.

The Bottom Line: You Can Do This!

Listen, making money online isn't about getting rich overnight. It's about building something sustainable, something that can grow over time. It's like planting a money tree – it takes time, care, and maybe a bit of magical fertilizer (aka hard work), but eventually, it'll bear fruit.

Remember, I started just like you – clueless, eager, and probably wearing pajamas while googling "how to make money online." Now, I'm living the dream, and there's no reason you can't do the same.

My journey wasn't always smooth sailing. I've had my fair share of failures and setbacks. But each failure taught me something valuable. I learned to persist, to adapt, and to never stop learning. And that's the secret sauce, folks – resilience and a willingness to keep growing.

Today, I'm not just making money; I'm living a life I once only dreamed of. I've bought my first house, my dream watch, and a luxury SUV. But more importantly, I've gained the freedom to travel with my family whenever we want. We've been to Hawaii multiple times, taken Caribbean cruises, and I've even flown first class to speak at international marketing events.

But here's the thing – this lifestyle didn't come from some get-rich-quick scheme or a magic button. It came from hard work, persistence, and a willingness to learn and adapt. And that's exactly what I want for you.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick a method, any method, and start your online money-making journey today. Who knows? This time next year, you might be the one writing a guide on how to make money online!

And hey, if all else fails, you can always start a blog about how not to make money online. Trust me, there's a market for that too!

Final Words of Wisdom

Before you go off to conquer the digital world, let me leave you with a few parting thoughts:

  1. Start Now: The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second-best time is now. The same goes for starting your online business. Don't wait for the "perfect" moment – it doesn't exist.
  2. Be Patient: Success doesn't happen overnight. It took me years to get where I am today. Be prepared for a marathon, not a sprint.
  3. Never Stop Learning: The online world changes fast. Stay curious, keep learning, and be ready to adapt.
  4. Build Relationships: Some of my biggest opportunities came from connections I made in the industry. Network, collaborate, and support others in your niche.
  5. Give Value First: Whether you're blogging, YouTubing, or freelancing, always focus on providing value to your audience or clients. The money will follow.
  6. Diversify Your Income: Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Having multiple income streams has saved my bacon more than once.
  7. Take Care of Yourself: It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and forget about your health. Remember, you can't enjoy your success if you're burnt out.
  8. Stay Ethical: There are plenty of ways to make money online legitimately. Don't fall for the temptation of get-rich-quick schemes or unethical practices. Your reputation is your most valuable asset.
  9. Celebrate Small Wins: Every step forward is progress. Celebrate your first blog post, your first YouTube subscriber, your first freelance gig. These small wins will keep you motivated on your journey.
  10. Enjoy the Journey: Yes, making money is great, but don't forget to enjoy the process. The skills you learn, the people you meet, and the personal growth you experience are invaluable.

Remember, your online journey is uniquely yours. It might not look exactly like mine or anyone else's, and that's okay. Embrace your own path, learn from your mistakes, and keep pushing forward.

I started this journey in a small apartment, dreaming of a better life. Now, I'm living that dream, and I want the same for you. It won't be easy, but I promise you, it's worth it.

So, are you ready to start your online money-making adventure? The internet is waiting for you, my friend. Go out there and make your mark!

And hey, when you're sipping cocktails on your own tropical vacation, don't forget to send me a postcard. I'll be cheering you on every step of the way.

Now go forth and conquer the internet, my friends. May your Wi-Fi be strong, your content be engaging, and your online earnings be plentiful!

I don’t mean to be rude, but that’s literally what this post is about…did you just skip the content and go straight to asking me what to do first?

  • Dear sir,
Good evening. I have a question. Many people say on YouTube that they are making money a lot just clicking survey. Is it true?

    Thanks

  • Bill Haynes says:

    HI, Jeff.
I read through your article. I’ve been scammed by a couple of these “easy money” come-ons. I’ve also been tempted to sell my blood plasma to buy expensive programs that promise boatloads of fast cash. I’m still working a program that made claims like that, and I have yet to make a dime. However, I’m hopeful. But, with almost six figures of debt staring at me, I’m also pretty desperate.
I’m familiar with Clickbank. I’ve tried selling some of their stuff before. The difficult part of doing it is eyeballs, traffic. That’s the time consuming part of any step-by-step plan, in my opinion. Any suggestions about how to get decent traffic without spending a fortune that I don’t have? This one dude went on and on for two and half hours of “training,” only to pitch a $1000 program at the end. I’m tired of that sort of thing! It might as well be $1000000!
So any suggestions you can make will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Bill.

    • Hey Bill

I PROMISE you, no matter what anybody says, or swears on their mothers life by, there is NO such thing as quick easy cash online. There are methods and techniques that work, sure, but they require work and effort on your part.

SO – don’t sell your blood plasma – it’s not worth it. What’s the name of the program you’re going through now?

Can I make money letting people advertise on my email.

        • Hey George,

Great question! Yes, you can – you can also do what’s called a “Solo Ad”, where you charge people for how many “clicks” (emails opened) you can send for them.

For example, let’s say your email list is 50,000 people and you KNOW you can get at least 1,000 clicks on it – you could actually earn between $0.30 – $0.50 per CLICK, so a 1,000 click solo ad could earn you between $300 and $500, potentially.

You can also use your list to promote various affiliate offers, I have a GREAT blog post on email marketing you may want to read next, here’s the link:

10 Email Marketing Best Practices for Affiliate Marketers (2019 Update)

  • Hey Jeff … a breath of fresh air in a very smoked fill room : )
I know this isn’t a self-help group but I will admit to “shiny object syndrome” and a debilitating credit crunch to boot.

Of all the MMO’s, as I am already in dire straights but with an incredible array of plug-ins and software to show for it … where would you say, ‘might’ be the quickest form of return?

I’m not talking big bucks here – I’m not greedy … maybe just $50/100 a month would help to get the credit card back down to safer levels.
I appreciate you can’t determine what is best out there with regard to what’s on sale but generally … blog, affiliate, video, multipliers, genies etc … what area might I go for, for safety?

    Kind regards,

    • Hey Roway, sorry for the delayed response – just saw this now 🙁

That being said, THANKS for your kind words, and I”m glad this post was useful to ya! 🙂

  • Hello Jeff, I liked the information you shared, seems genuine. My question to you is, Drop shipping, what is it exactly and can it be done without investment? I appreciate any feedback. Thank you for your time, Evelyn.

    • Hey Evelyn

      Thanks, I appreciate the feedback!

Drop shipping is essentially selling a product to somebody, then you buy it and keep the rest AFTER they pay you. Yes you TECHNICALLY can do this without investing anything, but it’s going to be hard as you’ll want to build up a Shopify store, pay for traffic from FB ads, etc.

Zero Up has great training on this – the course is NOT free – but think of it as an education with better potential than college 🙂

  • I understand how most people are making money online, and the various methods people are using to make money online. My issue is justifying my actions. It feels like we are all in an endless loop selling hope and promises that ‘you too can work from home’ or ‘make $XXXXXX dollars click here!’ but the methods are not where the money is, it is the people selling these ‘methods’ that are making the real cash.

So many pointless blogs, endless content, boring videos, and the reality is none of these ‘make money’ methods are all that easy, some are complete lies, most are just really hyped up, but to scale up and actually start making steady income,, you have to, well it feels like you have to sort out become a sell out yourself and end up joining in the loop promoting other peoples over-hyped products for your little affiliate commission.

To succeed in the online world I feel its important that you truly believe in what you are selling and have proven results to back up your claims and lots of real testimonials. So, to succeed online do not just follow the herd with the latest make money method wasting $1000 on some course, that is probably over saturated now anyways, figure out your passion, find a problem in that niche, and offer a solution that actually works and helps people.

Great site, lots of good honest info, thanks.

Hi Jeff… great content! Of all the methods you mentioned, I like YouTube the most but I’ve decided to get back into blogging too to combine with my YouTube efforts. For some reason, a lot of people seem to think that blogs are dying and are a thing of the past since social media platforms are all the rage now but I beg to differ as I’m sure you probably would too.

Something I really like and would like to start using on my websites is that Table of Contents plugin you use on this site of yours as found at the top of this blog post. Would you be kind enough to tell me the name of the plugin you’re using for the “Table of Contents” which you’re able to hide and show?

    Thanks in advance.

    • Hey CHristian

SO sorry about the delayed response, busy month! The plugin is called TOC+ I believe (Table of Contents Plus)

      Hope this helps!

  • Hi Jeff, great article. I like your down to earth no bs perspective.

  • Good Blog post-Jeff, I’m just about to launch an Optin Funnel for my new site, Aussie Golf Pros. Would you recommend a Google AdWords campaign? or just stick with FB, insta and Youtube ads. Also, primarily we will work towards an online membership-based business ( Instructional Coaching Videos, all things Golf from 2 Aussie Golf Pros) Whats should we use to do this? Currently, we run WordPress with a Thrive themes membership, Aweber and Vimeo. Is there a kick-ass Video membership site plugin for WP or would you go another way… any help would be great mate.
    Steve

    • Hey Steve,

Thanks for the comment man, and nice looking site – love the logo!

      Anyway, to answer your questions:

I would not worry too much about paid traffic YET until you have the full site built out and monetized. PERSONALLY, I do more FB than PPC (google) stuff, but i’m also more of an SEO guy and not a paid search expert. If you DO paid traffic though, make sure you’re driving traffic to your optin for a free report or golf lesson or something, it’ll be a waste to send them to a blog post unless you just care about traffic and branding at that point.

As for membership site plugins, unfortunately i’ve never set up or managed a membership site, so I don’t have any advice there.

Good luck, and I hope this helps! 🙂
