5 Facts About Internet Marketing Everyone Thinks Are True!
Internet marketing is one of the most misunderstood topics on the planet.
I honestly think that people know more about UFOs and aliens than they do about IM!
Did you know you actually can get a DEGREE in Internet Marketing? The problem with this though, it becomes redundant in just a few years as the internet and the way we market on it keeps changing rapidly.
Internet marketing is not a perfect science like math. It is still in its infant stage and evolving. Since there is no fixed syllabus or government approved course for IM, peoples’ knowledge on the subject continues to remain shady at best. No wonder there are numerous (and often ridiculous) myths associated with IM!
Here are 5 things about internet marketing everyone thinks are true!
1) You don’t need to know much about your niche:
LOL – I’m sorry but this is just dumb.
Every possible niche is covered by hundreds (often thousands and sometimes even millions) of websites. So you’re not going to impress anyone by just giving out general boring run of the mill information.
Superficiality and mediocrity have no place on the web – the competition is just too fierce.
If people sense that you have no idea what you’re talking about, not only will they run from you, but chances are they’ll be slinging crap in your direction too with a variety of not so nice comments. 🙂
So please – don’t be ludicrous and DO try to learn as much as you can about your niche.
Say your niche is football:
OK, so you do not have to be a pro player (although this would be ideal), but you should love the game to bits.
You should know:
- All the rules
- Important games
- Star players
- History of the game
- Key games
- Arch rivalries
- etc etc.
Without this, your content will not have an emotional impact on fans. You simply cannot maintain a high quality blog/website/channel about football if you are not an ardent follower of the game.
Sure, you can hire people to create content but you still need to give them directions. If your budget is big, you can hire a manager who knows all about your niche to do the dirty work for you.
The downside to this is – you’ll have little control over your business and will be left at the mercy of your employees.
I don’t mean to scare you – but isn’t it just easier and more fun to just pick a niche that you like/know about? 🙂

2) Internet marketing is for losers. People who aren’t good at anything else end up in IM:
Sadly, I’ve heard people say this before… LOL
BUT – Nothing can be farther from the truth. In fact, internet marketing requires you to be more dedicated, more persistent, more proactive and more decisive than the average employee.
Nobody tells you what to do – YOU have to make all the moves yourself.
Most people need an enforcer (boss) to put them to work. These people rarely succeed at IM unless they learn to be independent thinkers and action takers. IM is for winners!

3) You only need to work a little bit to make lots of money through internet marketing:
HAH! I often come across websites featuring income calculators. According to these calculators – If you work for 30 mins per day, you can earn 2000 USD per month. If you work for 2 hours, you can make 8000 bucks and if you happen to be a hardworker and work for 8 hours/day, you will make a whopping 32,000 USD per month!
Such bullshit claims are not uncommon on the web. Let me be very clear in saying that if you want to be a successful IM and quit your dayjob, you will have to work a LOT! And I mean – A LOT!
You should dedicate every spare minute to building your web business. Your success depends upon a lot of factors such as your niche, knowledge, approach, quality of work, number of hours etc. Give it everything you have and you should see substantial results within a few months to a year! The laws of the universe dictate that you cannot build a million dollar a year business by working for 2 hours per day! So stop fooling yourself.
4) People don’t read emails anymore; so don’t even bother with email marketing:
While it is true that people are much more interested in platforms such as facebook, twitter, Whatsapp etc; email is still the number one mode of OFFICIAL communication on the internet.
In my experience, email marketing is still the most effective and fool proof strategy for making money online. So make sure that you utilize the popularity of other platforms, but do not underestimate the power of having a solid list of email subscribers! (Check out “Build my List” for more info on this)

5) High traffic equals to more money:
How can high traffic not ensure massive earnings?
This contradicts everything you have read/heard about IM.
Well, just getting people to visit your website is not good enough if they click the back button at the next instant. Your traffic should be highly targeted for you to make any money – AND – you need to make sure you know how to CONVERT that traffic into sales or customers.
Targeted traffic is actually interested in what you have to say and hence it converts way more easily.
Many businesses offer to sell traffic. Do not fall for this trap – bought traffic is pretty much useless as it is not targeted. In fact, the ‘traffic’ does not even consist of real people, just computers!
